Robotics and smart devices: selling to European buyers
Robots and smart devices sell in Europe when buyers trust three things: the product is safe, the software and data are secure, and someone in Europe will service it. We find distributors, integrators, specialist retailers and service partners for your robots and connected devices, and we prepare the documents that European rules now require.
How European buyers buy robots and smart devices
Consumer robots, such as robot vacuum, window and pool cleaners, lawn robots and smart-home devices, are sold through electronics and appliance chains, DIY and garden retailers, specialist shops and marketplaces. Most of these channels buy from distributors who hold the EU stock, handle warranty returns and run local marketing. A new brand from China usually enters through one distributor per country or through a specialist online retailer before the large chains list it.
Professional robots follow a different path. Cleaning, service, delivery and industrial robots are sold by integrators and dealers who plan the project, install the robot, connect it to the customer’s systems and provide service. Buyers here are facility-management companies, hotels, hospitals, warehouses and factories. They test a robot on site before they buy, and the decision often takes months.
Seasons matter for consumer products. Lawn and pool robots are listed in winter for the spring season; robot vacuums and smart-home products sell most in the autumn and in the Christmas period, so listings are decided in spring and summer. Professional robots sell all year, but budgets are often fixed at the end of the year.
European buyers now ask about software as much as hardware: firmware updates, cybersecurity, where data and maps are stored, whether the app works in their language and how long the product will be supported. A supplier fails when the app collects data without clear consent, when spare batteries and brushes are not available, or when warranty repairs must be sent back to China. Our group has sold robot cleaners to customers in Central Europe and knows these questions from practice.

EU rules for robots and smart devices
Connected robots usually fall under several rules at once. The exact set depends on whether the product is for consumers or for professional use.
| Rule | What it means for you | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU, with LVD and EMC | Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or mobile connection brings the product under the RED, which also covers electrical safety and EMC. Products without radio follow the Low Voltage and EMC Directives. | We check your technical file, test reports and declaration of conformity. |
| RED cybersecurity (Delegated Regulation 2022/30) | Mandatory since 1 August 2025 for internet-connected radio products: network protection, personal data protection, secure updates; standards EN 18031-1/-2/-3. | We check whether your devices have test reports to EN 18031 and what buyers will ask about security. |
| Cyber Resilience Act (EU) 2024/2847 | Reporting of actively exploited vulnerabilities and serious incidents from 11 September 2026; most security and support-period requirements from 11 December 2027. | We help you set up a contact and update process that European buyers can rely on. |
| Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 | Applies from 20 January 2027 to machinery, including many professional and industrial robots; it adds requirements for software, cybersecurity and self-evolving behaviour. The Machinery Directive applies until then. | We tell you which robots fall under machinery rules and what to prepare. |
| Batteries Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, WEEE and RoHS | Battery labelling and EPR; from 18 February 2027 rules on removable and replaceable portable batteries and QR codes; WEEE registration and RoHS limits. | We check battery design and labels and arrange registrations through verified partners. |
| GDPR and the AI Act | Cameras, maps and voice data are personal data under the GDPR. Robots that use AI may fall under the AI Act, depending on how the AI is used. | We prepare answers on data storage and consent that buyers and retailers ask for. |
| GPSR and packaging | Consumer devices need an EU economic operator named on the product, packaging or document; packaging EPR and the PPWR from 12 August 2026. | Our EU company can act as the responsible economic operator under our EU Compliance package. |
This table explains the requirements. Final conformity assessment is the responsibility of the manufacturer and, where required, notified bodies.

Frequently asked questions
What certificates does a robot vacuum need to export to Europe?
A connected robot vacuum needs CE marking under the Radio Equipment Directive, including the cybersecurity requirements that apply since August 2025, and must meet RoHS, WEEE and battery rules. A GPSR economic operator in the EU must be named. Buyers will also ask about app privacy and spare parts.
What does the Cyber Resilience Act mean for our products?
From 11 September 2026 manufacturers must report actively exploited vulnerabilities and serious incidents. From 11 December 2027 most requirements apply, including secure design and security updates for a defined support period. Products designed now should already follow these rules.
Are professional cleaning or service robots machinery?
Many are. Robots with moving parts that work in buildings or factories are often covered by machinery rules, and from 20 January 2027 by the Machinery Regulation. We check each model and tell you which rules apply.
How do we find robot distributors in Europe?
We search and qualify them for you: country distributors, appliance chains, integrators and specialist retailers in our first markets. We check their brands, service capacity and sales channels, then introduce only suitable ones. You see every contact in the CRM report.
Do European buyers care where app data is stored?
Yes. Retailers and professional buyers ask where maps, images and user data are stored, who can access them and how users give consent. Clear answers and a privacy notice in the local language make listing much easier.
Who handles warranty repairs in Europe?
Buyers expect repairs and replacements inside Europe. We can hold spare parts and replacement units in Poland and work with your distributor on the warranty process, so that customers do not have to send products back to China.
