Selling in Mexico: distributors, retail and marketplaces

Mexico is the second-largest economy of Latin America, with a large consumer market, strong retail groups, fast-growing online sales and an industrial base closely linked to the USA. It has also become harder for Chinese goods: from 1 January 2026 Mexico raised import duties, up to 50%, on 1,463 tariff lines from countries without a trade agreement with Mexico, including China.

Our home base is Europe, and we have no office in Mexico. For the Mexican market we work on request: we find importers and distributors, prepare offers and follow up contacts, while customs, NOM conformity and stock stay with the Mexican importer. The market assessment first checks duties and rules for your products.

How B2B buying works in Mexico

Buyers are importers and distributors, wholesale companies, department stores and retail chains, online sellers, builders and industrial companies. Many importers are based in Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara. Because Mexico is closely linked to the US market, a large share of industrial buyers supply factories in the north of the country, and some importers work for both markets.

Business is personal and done in Spanish. Large importers accept a first offer in English, but product information, labels and manuals must be in Spanish. Buyers expect video calls or visits, samples and patience in negotiations, and they want to know exactly which documents you supply for customs and NOM conformity. Importers must be registered in Mexico’s importers register, and some sectors, such as textiles, footwear and steel, need an additional sector registration.

What Chinese suppliers often get wrong

Many suppliers quote with duty rates from 2025. From 1 January 2026 Mexico raised import duties on 1,463 tariff lines from countries without a trade agreement with Mexico, including China; the increase reaches up to 50%, and textiles, clothing, steel, plastics and auto parts are among the most affected categories. Rates depend on the customs code, so check current rates before every quote.

The second mistake is labelling. Many products must meet the relevant NOM before import, and label compliance is checked at customs. NOM-050-SCFI sets general commercial information for consumer goods, NOM-004-SCFI covers textiles and clothing, and NOM-024-SCFI covers electronic and electrical goods; safety certification for regulated products is issued by accredited bodies, usually with the importer. Goods without correct Spanish labels can be held at the border.

How we approach Mexico

We look for importers that already handle your category, are registered for it and have experience with NOM certification. Our team prepares the offer in English with Spanish product information, calculates the landed price with current duties, and follows up every contact. Customs and conformity steps are handled by the importer. Contracts with buyers are signed in your name, and every introduced buyer is registered in the shared CRM.

Frequently asked questions

What duties does Mexico charge on goods from China?

From 1 January 2026 Mexico raised duties, up to 50%, on 1,463 tariff lines from countries without a trade agreement with Mexico, including China. Other goods pay the normal Mexican tariff. Rates depend on the customs code, so we check current rates for your products before the offer.

What is NOM certification?

NOMs are Mexican official standards. Many products, for example electrical goods, toys and textiles, must meet the relevant NOM and its labelling rules before import, and labels must be in Spanish. The importer usually arranges certification with an accredited body.

What VAT applies in Mexico?

The standard VAT (IVA) rate is 16%. The importer pays it at customs together with the duty, so it is not part of your export price.

Can I sell to Mexico through the USA?

Usually not to avoid duties: the higher Mexican rates apply to goods of Chinese origin, whichever country they are shipped from. Some importers buy for both markets, which we take into account when we look for buyers.

Do you have an office in Mexico?

No. Our home base is Europe. For Mexico we find and contact importers and distributors and prepare offers; customs, NOM conformity and stock stay with the Mexican importer.

Is Mexico worth it for a Chinese factory?

It can be, if your price still works after the 2026 duties and an importer can handle NOM conformity. For most factories Europe comes first. The market assessment shows this before you commit.
