Selling in the Western Balkans (Serbia, Bosnia, North Macedonia, Albania): distributors, retail and marketplaces

Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Albania are close to the EU, trade a lot with it and are all EU candidate countries. Serbia is the largest market of the four; distributors in Belgrade often supply neighbouring countries as well.

The markets are smaller than Poland or Germany, but competition is lower and many buyers already import from China. We serve the region on request, through distributors and partners, after checking the rules for your product in the market assessment.

How B2B buying works in the Western Balkans

Buyers are importers and distributors, wholesale companies, DIY and home retail chains, electronics retailers, online shops, builders and installers. Many companies are family-owned and medium-sized. They buy in smaller volumes than Western European chains, but they decide quickly and are loyal once a supplier proves reliable.

Serbian, Bosnian and Croatian are close to each other, so one well-prepared offer can often work for buyers in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. North Macedonia and Albania need their own language versions. English is common in first contact. Buyers want samples, clear prices in euro and fast answers.

What Chinese suppliers often get wrong

A common mistake is to assume that these countries follow EU rules automatically. They are not EU members. Their product laws are largely aligned with EU directives, but each country has its own national procedures. In Serbia, products under certain technical regulations carry the national 3A mark, and EU conformity documents can be recognised through a national procedure. Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Albania apply their own rules. EU test reports are usually a strong basis, but they do not replace local steps. We check the requirements for each product and country.

How we approach the Western Balkans

We usually start in Serbia, the largest market, and look for distributors that also supply neighbouring countries. Our team in Poland researches importers in your category, prepares the offer in English and local languages, and follows up every contact. Local import and conformity steps are handled with the importer. Contracts with buyers are signed in your name, and every introduced buyer is registered in the shared CRM.

Frequently asked questions

Is CE marking enough for Serbia?

Not always. Serbia is not an EU member and has its own technical regulations, largely aligned with EU directives. Some products carry the national 3A mark, and EU conformity documents can be recognised through a national procedure. We check what applies to your product.

Can one distributor cover several Balkan countries?

Often yes. Some distributors in Serbia and other countries supply several markets of the region. Each country still has its own customs and product rules, so the distributor handles import country by country.

What language should offers be in?

English works for first contact. For product information and labels we prepare Serbian, which is also understood in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Macedonian or Albanian where needed.

Do I need a local company?

No. Local importers buy from your factory and handle import, VAT and local conformity steps. Contracts are signed between your factory and the buyer.

Are the Western Balkans worth it for a Chinese factory?

They can be a good addition to EU sales, with lower competition and buyers who already import from China. Orders are usually smaller than in large EU markets. The market assessment shows whether your category has enough buyers.
